What can dead animals tell us about human health and disease? It turns out, quite a bit. From virus and other pathogen cycles to the quality of the environments we call home, animal health and animal science can tell us a lot about ourselves as humans and how we might improve public health.
As the school looks to the future and to how it can sustain and enhance diversity work in our community, professors Marie O’Neill and Enrique Neblett are providing key leadership in this ongoing, constantly evolving work.
We might take for granted our knowledge that the earth is round or how electricity works. But these were once debated subjects, and we’re still learning new things about even the foundational aspects of science, things we might take for granted. At its best, science changes because the world changes.
Despite the difficult times, signs of hope have blossomed around the Michigan Public Health community. Students help lead campus sampling efforts, alumni bring all their public health expertise to bear, and the school moves up in national rankings.
It is painfully clear that everyone in our nation and across the world needs an injection of public health—in policy, economics, and across the sociopolitical spectrum—to effect real and sustainable change. Making all of our choices with a public health lens, we’ll be closer to achieving a healthier, more equitable world for all.
A global pandemic has challenged the idea that our public health systems are adequately developed and resourced and has exposed deep needs across those systems. All eyes are on public health and will be for the foreseeable future.
