Center for Evaluating Health Reform (CEHR)
The Center for Evaluating Health Reform is charged with advancing our knowledge of health system reform through improving the process of academic research. CEHR focuses on the evaluation of health policies. The center aims to improve the quality of healthcare in the US by both identifying the incentive systems and practices that reduce costs and improve the quality of care, and identifying new models of quality improvement. Most recently, the center has been investigating the effects of the Affordable Care Act and related policies such as the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program and the Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program. Faculty Lead: Dr. Edward Norton
Center for Substance Use Policy and Economic Research (M-SUPER)

The network’s mission is to bring together interdisciplinary teams with expertise in health economics, health policy, and health services research to advance addiction research and to provide timely data-driven policy recommendations. The network’s members employ rigorous quantitative approaches and leverage access to multiple large databases to address pressing substance use policy knowledge gaps. Faculty Lead: Dr. Thuy Nguyen
Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID)
Conceptualized by University of Michigan faculty in 2005, V-BID is built on the principle of lowering or removing financial barriers to essential, high-value clinical services. V-BID plans align patients’ out-of-pocket costs, such as copayments, with the value of services. University of Michigan faculty first conceptualized and coined the V-BID concept and have guided this approach from early principles to adoption in the private and public sectors. Since its inception in 2005, V-BID has led efforts to promote the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative health benefit designs that improve quality and lower costs – the primary goals of health care reform. Faculty Lead: Dr. Mark Fendrick
Griffith Leadership Center (GLC)
The GLC promotes and supports excellence in health management and policy leaders by strengthening the connections among research, teaching and practice and creating opportunities for leadership development. In addition, the GLC supports initiatives to promote and support translational research that addresses critical health and health policy issues to improve health management and policy decision making. The GLC is achieving its mission through the shared energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm of its Advisory Board, whose members are recognized health management and policy leaders. The work of the GLC directly enhances the University of Michigan Health Management and Policy Department's research and teaching programs, as well as the careers of its alumni and colleagues.
The Health Management & Policy Governance Lab at the University of Michigan brings together experts studying the effects of governance and politics on health policy decision-making, implementation, and outcomes. Governance Lab Collaborators include HMP faculty, HSOP doctoral program alumni, and HMP and SPH students at all levels who conduct or want to gain experience in policy-engaged research. We match students, as HMP Governance Lab Fellows, with research projects in which faculty are conducting analysis of health politics and policymaking, seeking to influence health policies, or that involve partnerships with governments or advocates, both in the US and around the world. Faculty Lead: Dr. Holly Jarman
