Readmission/Time to Complete Degree
Readmission
We know that sometimes life challenges can make it hard to continue enrollment at the University of Michigan. Perhaps the best thing to do is to step away, take care of yourself, and put formal education on hold. If you are a former U-M student and now wish to return to the same school or college on the Ann Arbor campus, we would like to do all we can to help you complete your degree.
All returning students are encouraged to first schedule an appointment with their academic advisor to develop a re-entry plan.
Time to complete Degree
Undergraduate students
For undergraduate students, there is no time limit between the start of the degree program and to completion of degree requirements. See guidelines for readmission/reactivation below.
Readmission for undergraduate students:
If a student is not continuously enrolled, there may be implications to remaining an active student in the program of study, and in some cases, you may be required to be readmitted.
Former School of Public Health undergraduate students who seek to re-enroll in the BA or BS program after not registering in the program for more than 24 months may apply for readmission after meeting with the program director.
Please note that students who did not leave the program in good academic standing (were suspended) and who have not registered for more than 24 months will need to petition the program to be allowed to complete a readmission application. The steps include:
- Meet with the program director at least eight weeks prior to the term they would like to return for guidance on what materials are needed and a deadline for submitting the petition.
- Obtain permission to reapply to the program.
- If readmitted, immediately seek academic advising.
- Secure a registration day/time by contacting the School of Public Health Registrar
If you are a student who has not enrolled in over 12 months but less than 24 months
and are in good academic standing, you will need to meet with your academic advisor
and then request reactivation of the student record to register/enroll by contacting
the School of Public Health Registrar
Please note that changes in the curriculum may alter course availability or structure.
For students who disenroll for one or more academic years, graduation requirements
will be reviewed and amended as needed, based on outstanding curricular requirements
as well as current course offerings. For undergraduate students, the Program Director,
working with the undergraduate curriculum committee (CUE), will determine appropriate
graduation requirements as needed.
MPH/MHSA Students
A student is allowed 5 years from the start of the program for an MPH or MHSA to complete degree requirements. If a student has been away from the school for one academic year or longer, they will need to fill out the Readmission Application (PDF). This application should be submitted to the department the student was initially admitted to.
